Observations at New Vision Elementary

So, Today was my first day at my observations. I coincidentally have the teacher I did my first observations with during my first semester. (Ms. V) She is all about her student observers working with the students on a more hands on basis. I got the chance to do a short reading comprehension sheet with a small group of students. The students are smart but they are extremely loud and obnoxious from what I seen today. Overall it was a good experience because she allowed me to work with the students on my own unlike a lot of the teachers I had to observe in the past.

  1. Can you share with us some interesting observation from your work with this small group of students? Did they comprehend the texts well? What strategies (think-aloud, look back, and so on)? did they use to make sense of the texts? I am glad that the teacher took the approach to have teacher candidates work with students under supervision. :-)

  2. While working with the small group of students I was able to see them determine whether the reading was an article, story, or poem. This is a great strategy because then the students can differentiate between what makes these 3 different reading formats important. The students would highlight the important facts in the story after reading the questions given. Also the students would divide up the different sections in the reading by labeling them with numbers. I would have like to be able to see the students write narratives or short stories or even write a book review, but due to the state exam's they are not really focused on that which is sad. There are many techniques available to the students but some of them do not take the time to put them into practice, but overall they are hard working students.
