COCA-Concepts of Comprehension Assessment

The COCA was designed to assess the processes rather than the products of comprehension which I believe is a great concept. In so many schools today the process leading up to comprehension is often overlooked. The process of comprehension is so critical when students are in the primary grades because that can potentially have an effect on how they will do later on. The different books for assessment of the COCA include the Salmon, and the Dragon files. In the COCA one major thing that stuck out to me was that the students had to fill in the blanks of the specific story. I think that is a great tool because this way the teacher has a true understanding of whether the student comprehends what was just read to him/her. It is also a good way to assess the students vocabulary and word recognition. I would incorporate this assessment tool in my classroom because I believe it gives the teacher an idea of where his/her students are in relation to their reading comprehension abilities.

As a future teacher would this tool be something you would incorporate into your classroom? Why or Why not?

  1. Good question. Let's also bring it up in class.

  2. I deffinitly think that as a future teacher this is something I would look to bring into my classroom and use as an effective assessment. I like the idea that it can be done to either all of my students or just a select few that are showing concerning signs in lacking comprehension. I think it is a unique method of assessment and is similar yet very different to the other types of assessment I am familiar with and I would like to get the chance to put it to use.

  3. As I future teacher, I would like to use the COCA. I loved the ideas and areas the assessment covered and found it to be very useful to students especially of that age group. We as future teachers want to instill in students the importance of comprehension and inferring the text they are reading. And there is no better time than to start at an early age, so that they can take that with them as they progress to the higher grades and upper levels of reading.

  4. I would use this because I like the fact that it is creative, plus it helps the teacher with assessment and keep the interests of the students as well.
